Debitum verification guide: dos and don’ts for a smoother onboarding process

Desk with calculator representing Debitum Loyalty and Onboarding

Opening an investment account on Debitum is designed to be simple and secure. In most cases, verification is completed quickly.

When delays happen, they are often caused by small and easily fixable issues such as blurry photos, unsupported documents or information that does not match your registration details.

This guide covers the most common verification challenges and how to avoid them, helping you complete the process faster and start investing sooner.

Why verification on Debitum matters?

As a regulated investment platform, Debitum follows Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) requirements.

These checks help protect investors, prevent fraud and maintain a secure investment environment for everyone on the platform.

Verification on Debitum includes:

  • Identity verification (IDV),
  • Know Your Customer (KYC) review,
  • Suitability Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ),
  • Proof of Address (POA) verification to increase the deposit limit,
  • Source of Funds (SOF) verification to increase the deposit limit.

Let’s look at the most common issues and how to avoid them.

Debitum identity verification (IDV): dos and don’ts

Identity verification confirms that you are who you claim to be.

✅ Do

  • Use a valid passport or an accepted national ID card,
  • The document should have a machine-readable zone (MRZ),
  • Ensure all information is clearly visible,
  • Take photos in good lighting,
  • Use a live selfie during verification,
  • Enter your name exactly as it appears on your document.

❌ Don’t

  • Upload a driver’s license or other unsupported document,
  • Use an expired document,
  • Use a document without MRZ,
  • Submit blurry photos,
  • Upload cropped images,
  • Use screenshots, scans or saved photos instead of photos of original documents,
  • Enter a different spelling of your name.

Common reasons identity verification is rejected

The document is not accepted

Debitum accepts passports and national ID cards issued by European Union (EU) countries.

For non-EU citizens, passports must include a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ). You can read more on accepted identity documents here.

The document or selfie is blurry

Poor lighting, reflections or an out-of-focus image can prevent verification.

Use a good-quality camera and stand in natural light whenever possible and make sure all information on document photos is easy to read.

The document is cropped

Every corner of the document should be visible. No information should be cut off or covered.

The face does not match the document photo

This can happen if your appearance has changed significantly since the document was issued.

For example:

  • A new hairstyle,
  • A beard,
  • Glasses,
  • An older document photo.

If this happens, contact Debitum Support. The compliance team can review your case manually.

A non-live photo was used

The verification process requires a live selfie and a live photo of your document.

Screenshots, scanned copies or saved images from another device will not be accepted.

Your registration details do not match your document

Your first name and last name should match your identity document exactly.

Even small differences can trigger additional review.

Know Your Customer (KYC) review: dos and don’ts

Know Your Customer (KYC) is a process required by law, as Debitum is a licensed investment platform regulated by the Bank of Latvia.

It allows us to comply with AML procedures to keep your account secure and meet international regulatory standards. KYC allows you to see the most suitable offers on our platform as well.

Most KYC reviews are completed quickly. Occasionally, additional checks may be required.

✅ Do

  • Respond promptly if additional information is requested,
  • Ensure all submitted information is accurate and up to date,
  • Contact Support if you are unsure about your verification status.

❌ Don’t

  • Ignore requests from the compliance team,
  • Submit multiple versions of the same document unless requested.

Good to know about the Debitum KYC

Additional review does not necessarily indicate a problem.

The compliance team may simply need more information or clarification before completing verification.

Suitability Assessment (SAQ): dos and don’ts

The Suitability Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) helps determine which investment products may be appropriate for your knowledge and experience level. This is a standard among regulated investment platforms that helps to provide investor protection.

✅ Do

  • Answer honestly,
  • Read each question carefully,
  • Take your time when completing the questionnaire.

❌ Don’t

  • Rush through the assessment,
  • Assume all investment opportunities will automatically be available.

Good to know about Debitum SAQ

Your answers may affect which investment products are available to you.

If you believe you made a mistake or have changed your mind, you can retake the assessment and update your answers.

The purpose of the questionnaire is to help ensure investors understand the products they choose to invest in.

Proof of Address: dos and don’ts

Proof of Address helps confirm your current place of residence. Without a verified address, your account may be limited to an annual deposit cap of €1000, in line with AML risk controls.

✅ Do

  • Submit a recent utility bill, bank statement or government-issued letter,
  • Ensure the document is less than three months old,
  • Upload a clear, readable and unedited image.

❌ Don’t

  • Upload an ID card as Proof of Address,
  • Submit documents older than three months,
  • Upload blurry or partially visible documents.

Common reasons Proof of Address is rejected

The document is too blurry

All information must be readable with nothing covered or blurry.

The document is older than three months

All Proof of Address documents must be issued within the last three months.

The wrong document type is submitted

Identity documents are not accepted as Proof of Address.

Instead, use:

  • Utility bills,
  • Bank account statements,
  • Government-issued letters.

The document remains under review

Sometimes additional checks are required even when the information appears correct.

If your document remains under review for an extended period, contact Debitum Support for assistance.

Source of Funds: dos and don’ts

If you wish to increase your deposit limits, you’ll need to pass Source of Funds (SOF) verification. This helps demonstrate where your investment capital originates from.

This is a standard AML requirement used throughout the financial industry and helps maintain a secure investment environment for all investors.

✅ Do

  • Provide documents covering the last 12 months,
  • Upload clear, unedited documents with all incoming payments shown,
  • Make sure all information is visible,
  • Submit accepted document types.

❌ Don’t

  • Cover information on documents,
  • Upload filtered or edited screenshots,
  • Submit incomplete statements,
  • Submit statements for a period of less than 12 months,
  • Provide unsupported document types.

Which documents are accepted for Debitum SOF verification?

You can provide one of the following documents:

  • Bank account statements covering the last 12 months (unedited, showing all incoming payments),
  • Salary payslips covering the last 12 months,
  • Your most recent annual tax declaration,
  • Annual report (for company accounts).

Common reasons for the delay in Source of Funds verification

The document quality is poor

Blurred, filtered or partially visible documents may not be accepted.

The document does not cover the required period

Deposit limits are generally assessed on an annual basis.

For this reason, the compliance team requests documentation covering the previous 12 months rather than a shorter period. It is also important not to filter any information out and show the full incoming information within the last 12-month period.

The wrong document type is submitted

Providing unsupported documentation often results in additional review requests and delays.

You can read more on how to increase your Debitum deposit limits with SOF documents here.

Quick checklist before you submit your Debitum verification

Before starting verification, make sure you can answer “yes” to these questions:

✅ Am I using a valid passport or accepted ID card with a machine-readable zone (MRZ)?

✅ Is every corner of my document visible?

✅ Are my photos clear, unedited and well-lit?

✅ Does my registered name match my document exactly?

✅ Is my Proof of Address issued within the last 3 months?

✅ Do my Source of Funds documents cover the requested period of the full 12 months?

A quick check before submission can help prevent most verification delays.

Final thoughts

Verification is an important part of creating a safe and transparent investment environment at Debitum.
